This is the climax Are you sure? We know from the poem what is about to come; it is too predictable to be the climax. When did chaos break out? When did the leadership disappear, and feelings of distrust and lack of civilization occur? That would have come with Wargrave's death. Up until that time, he led the charge. Now they become more frantic and illogical as their revered leader is gone!

Put a line above Assignment #1; assignment #2 will go above assignment #1.
Read chapter two.
Choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
With your small group, find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
Each member of your group must write on his or her WIKI page the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
Then, in a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.
Read chapter three for Monday, October 25.
Foreshadowing
"He thought to himself, 'He'll ask me now if I was old enough to be in the war. These old boys always do.' But General Macarthur did not mention the war." (p.22) I think this means Philip Lombard already knows about General Macarthur and decided not to ask him about the war for fear of something. Maybe Philip Lombard was in the war and knew General Macarthur. Another possible answer is that General Macarthur was not in the war and is faking it and Philip Lombard knows that. Maybe, he just thought it was rude to ask people if they were in the war and thought it would be polite not to mention it.
"Queer business when you came to think of it- the whole thing was queer- very queer." (p.26) I think this means that something weird is going on, but they cannot get to the bottom of it yet. Maybe it was a hoax sending them to Indian Island. There is something very weird about their host not being on the island with them. Also, it seems as if all the guests have something to hide.
"Ten little Indian boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were nine." (p.31)
There are ten people on Indian Island and the poem mentions ten Indians. They are the ten Indians and they will slowly die one by one. This means someone will probably die sometime soon because they choke. At the end of chapter two it talks about them getting ready for dinner. One might die at this dinner tonight.
"Remember this island when I was a kid. Never thought I'd be doing this sort of a job in a house here.. Good thing, perhaps, that one can't foresee the future...." (p.36)
Is he hinting at something happening in the future? It seems odd considering he almost says that like he knows what will happen in the future. If he does know what will happen in the future why won't he mention this to anyone. It obviously can't be good. If he knows what will happen and the host is not there with the guests on the island, maybe he is the host. Maybe he was behind all of this! Love the explanations! The idea that the entire event is a hoax leads the reader down a different path. And to think that General Macarthur is faking it is an interesting thought! Great job! Mrs. M

how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?
how might the title be a clue to the story?
A mystery novel differs from a narrative because a narrative tells a series of events while a mystery does that yet solves a question. A mystery tends to be fiction while a narrative can be both fiction and nonfiction. The title is a clue to the story because I think it means at the end, no one will be left. Whether or not that is correct, I don't know. Excellent insight regarding your mystery explanation. A question (or maybe more than one) must be resolved for the mystery genre.
